Why Genesis days are not 24-hour days – Part 3

Thank you all for participating in the discussion and sharing your views whether we agree or not, I appreciate all of your precious feedback. I encourage everyone to speak their mind as they see fit. 🙂

A couple of remarks, first I do not think that the days in genesis, represent ages. As you also noticed, as far yom is concerned, where it does also mean more than a day, I am simply not trying to prove that because I realize that it is unlikely so. I am not arguing with any biblical verses in genesis to mean differently than six literal days. My point is that the story of Genesis is not talking about the age of earth at all. My contention is that is using poetic structure’s to emphasize creation and perhaps make the story more easy to remember, with categorical creation details divided into segments, to be sung and told again to future generations. I would be intellectually dishonest if I do what I am asking you not to do.

Furthermore I also believe that the Genesis authors believed that the six days actually meant six literal days, just like they thought that the Sun and the moon orbit around the Earth and not vice-versa. Their knowledge was limited to their day and age. That is perhaps likely so, because in Exodus 20 when the genesis creation account is again summarized they follow the original six day construct, and that is also for the sake of consistency.

The Earth is young but it just looks old: Why Genesis days are not 24-hour days – part 2

So the most common argument I have come across is that the earth is young but God made it look old. Just like Adam was not made as a baby but as an adult, so it would logically follow that the earth could have been made the same way. But did that really happen?

On the first glance even though I strongly disagree with this position, I can say, yeah sure it may have happened. God is certainly not off- limits to deception. The lord does work in mysterious ways. What if he really made the earth and the entire universe 6000 years ago but made it look like it was 14 billion years old? Can he do it, well if he can do anything yeah, sure.

It is a clever position because it can neither be supported from within the scriptures, nor outside of it. There is no way to really test this claim. I could be accused of holding a similar position, which can not be defended by scriptures, sure, I grant you this. But the fact is, my position is based on observation and science, the only difference is that I am not treating the Genesis account as literal. But on the other hand, the idea that Genesis account of creation should be taken literally,

Why Genesis days are not 24-hour days

This is in response to most believers, who I love in Christ, to see why I believe that the Genesis account should not be literal as often a 6-day creation model would imply. Before I start let me make it clear that the purpose of this post is healthy discussion. You can share your thoughts, my aim is not to attack the YEC position but rather clear up some misconceptions and also why I no longer believe in a 6-day creation account (Yes, I used to).

I believe there are ample reasons to simply conclude that the genesis account is not entirely 24 hour periods.

So ladies and gentleman open your bibles because we need to look down somethings. 🙂

First look at day 3, it says

Then God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with seed in them, on the earth”; and it was so.
And the earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.

Gen 1:11-12

Look, God lets the earth bring forth all vegetation. The Hebrew word used is dasha (Strong’s #H1876) which means growing from seeds or seedlings. But this is problematic, because it certainly takes longer than 24 hours to actually have happened. It might take years for some plants to be mature enough. In fact no plant can grow to maturity in 24 hours. That is a proven thing. Worse a new problem arises when we find that the trees and plants are bearing fruits as well. The text,

The gospel is for ugly people too

The beauty of the cross is that it is ugly. Seriously, the cross is ugly. It is the symbol of an ugly death that happened for the sake of ugly sins, and it is for ugly people to come and fall down on their knees in repentance.

Wow! Just amazing, it is a must read guys.

The gospel is for ugly people too.

Faith vs. Stupidity: things we should always remember

I encourage you to read and see that we as Christians should avoid the nonsense and follow a spirit filled life:

Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. …

Matthew 25:1-46

Faith: Love your enemy.

Stupidity: Judging people and feel good about it.

If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?

Matthew 5:46

Faith: I need to pray about my weaknesses

Stupidity: God is tempting me…

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

A question about Nietzsche and his argument

Greg from Poeticalcynic asked this question, here is my take on it Greg.

from wikipedia

Friedrich Nietzsche said:

“A god who is all-knowing and all-powerful and who does not even make sure his creatures understand his intention—could that be a god of goodness? Who allows countless doubts and dubieties to persist, for thousands of years, as though the salvation of mankind were unaffected by them, and who on the other hand holds out the prospect of frightful consequences if any mistake is made as to the nature of truth? . . . Did he perhaps lack intelligence to do so? Or the eloquence? Must he not then . . . be able to help and counsel [his creatures], except in the manner of a deaf man making all kinds of ambiguous signs when the most fearful danger is about to befall on his child or dog?”

Plenty of problems there:

1. “A god …who does not even make sure his creatures understand his intention”

I would question the validity of this statement, I would ask how is this alone tested and proved, Empiricism? That carries its own problems. What about his creatures who do understand?

2. “Could be a God of goodness”

That is a platonic view of God, God is not made up of goodness or badness. A more Thomistic approach would seriously challenge this notion. Anyway, its also wrong because it assumes God is good according to what we feel good. Can we not be wrong? How do we decide what is good? by vote?

What about people who do not have this complain against God? God doesn’t have goodness in him, he is goodness. Just like he doesn’t have lovely feelings for us, he is Love.

Dear angry atheist: an open letter

Dear angry atheist,

I get it why you are angry at me. May be you were brought up by bad religion, may be you were taught to believe in God and you didn’t feel anything, may be your prayers went unanswered, may be you are a big fan of hitches and Dawkins. May be you just do not like the idea of  a God in the first place, may be you are scared of hell, may be you are a free thinker who despises boundaries and commandments in a book called Bible, may be you are confused which God is to be followed. May be you went though something bad, or may be you are too sensitive and can not comprehend the idea of God and an evil world, may be you just like free sex, may be you are a very good person who does not need God, may be you live better than most Christians, may be you think you are above others, intellectually or may be you just don’t give a fuck. For whichever reasons you are an atheist, is none of my business.

I am also sure you are a human being who is honest to his doubts and convictions, I respect that. I also realize that not all atheists are angry people. But when you talk to me like an angry atheist

LOVE-HOPE-PEACE In Our Changing World

Danny Dutton, an 8-year-old boy from in Chula Vista , CA . was asked to do a homework assignment.  It was a writing assignment; the topic  “EXPLAIN GOD”

EXPLANATION OF GOD:  One of God’s main jobs is making people.  He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth.  He doesn’t make grownups, just babies.  I think because they are smaller and easier to make.  That way he doesn’t have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk.  He can just leave that to mothers and fathers.

God’s second most important job is listening to prayers.  An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime.  God doesn’t have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this.  Because he…

Defend your faith, not God

I’m not actually mad at God. I don’t believe in the fucker.

I am sure if you are a Christian and on the internet you might have read these words more than often. Words that might just piss you off or at least that is what the author originally had in mind. Most of the time what usually follows is that Christians often try to justify God in his actions. They sometimes give excellent rationale and at other times they say something dumber than dumb. Most Christians and I am talking about some hardcore Christians, might just turn back and give the same dosage of abusive language to the author. But in all of this, what Christians do not realize that at the moment they tried to justify God’s actions, they ended up in a trap.

Lets face it, you cannot defend God, convincingly. You can offer explanations and all that but the truth is no one is bound or obliged to believe how you think your God is good. To an atheist, a Muslim praising his God, a Buddhist praising Buddha and a Christian praising Jesus is all the same.  Most atheists display a remarkable ignorance of faith and its inner working. And so very often if you are going to quote your bible, my bet is it is not going to work because to the atheist it is a “crap load of fabricated stories”.
